Aperture values - Fixed V1.3

Postby Dongorath » 07 Apr 2010, 19:04

When I input my aperture values (e.g. 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.6 and so on), once I leave the screen, all the values are changed (in my case : 3.56, 4, 4.49, 5.04, 5.66 and so on). Is there a rounding issue or is there an unknown (at least to me) rule of scaling due to the characteristics of the camera (Canon EOS 400D in my case) ?

Ok, after a few Wikipedia searches, I found the answer !(For the interested, the f/3.5, f/4, f/4.5, f/5 are only rounded values displayed by the camera where the real values are in fact of the form sqrt(2)^(n/3), i.e. each step reduce the exposure value by a third).

But then, shouldn't the application display the rounded values displayed on the lenses or by the camera while using the real values in the calculations ? Should be less confusing.

Hello,

Yes you are right, the aperture values that we all know are rounded values. When you enter an aperture value (rounded value) in WinMoDof it will be automatically linked to the nearest real aperture value.

You are also right when you say that the application should display the rounded values, and if it is not the case then this is a bug!
Here is a screenshot of how aperture values should be displayed:

Rounded values are displayed in big fonts, and real values in tiny fonts.
On the main screen (where you can see hyperfocal), only rounded values should be visible.

If this doesn't work fine on your device, can you please tell me how you created your lens, and if applicable how you added/edited your aperture values? So I can reproduce this issue.

Thanks for your feedback

When creating a lens, when I first enter the aperture range (e.g. 2.8 to 22), the values are ok. I go to see the aperture values, I have the same values in your screenshot (f/2.8 in big and (f/2.828) in little). And when I click on "Ok", all the values displayed in big font are updated with the values rounded to 2 decimals (e.g. f/2.83). If I clear all the values and enter them by hand, they're ok the first time, but when I click ok, they're changed to the real values.
Here's a screenshot :

Thank you very much Dongorath.
I managed to reproduce it.
I moved your topic into the "bugs" forum.
I work on this issue right now!

Should be fixed in version 1.3. But you have to create again or modify your lens to have correct values.
